Lesson 5 - Week 2

Lesson 5 - Week 2

For about 15 minutes, Tasol and I went down to the Middle School Centre again to call some wristband companies.

We called up two companies...
http://www.powerfulpromotionalproducts.com/ Phone: 07 5593 2737
http://www.brandedproducts.com.au/ Phone: 03 9791 4122

But we had problems contacting them because one company, they wouldn't answer and the other one has problem with the connection. So we decided to go up and get another company's number. While Tasol and Gah Vin worked on the cost of the products, Naomi and I started designing our logo and the poster.

Gah Vin and Tasol : calculated the price of 25,000 wristbands/ hats and how much it would cost with the ticket.

http://www.crazycustomcaps.com/
Flat Peak Hats similar to New Era caps cost for 1: $14.95
quantity; 25000
discount per cap: $8
total cost: (14.95x25000)-25000x8=$173740

http://www.handband.com/
10 000 wristbands cost- $6700
therefore 25000 wristbands will cost= $6700x2.5=$16750
price of 1 concert ticket= $99
whole cost of tickets=99x25000=$2475000
profit=total cost of tickets - price of hats and wristbands
=2475000 - (173750+16750)= $2284500

Gah Vin & Tasol: this was not accurate. It was the cost of the wristbands that should be included in the ticket costs but the whale hats shouldn't be.

Profit=2475000-16750=$2458250 from the ticket concerts
Need to make profit on hats.

Caps were bought on a $8 discount per cap so each cap actually cost us $6.95 instead of $14.95. So we will still be making profit if we use the price $14.95.
We will be making $8 profit per cap.

Profit for caps= $8 x 20000= $160000

Generalising that all the tickets will be sold; as the previous Summadayze on the Gold Coast was.
Total profit excluding ticketing and money put aside for singers = profit for tickets + profit for caps = $2458250 + $160000 = $2618250

All profit will go to fund Greenpeace and to support their ' Stop Whaling' campaign.
(a) 10% of the cost of tickets will go to GCAC ticket tec = 0.1 x $2458250 = $245825
(b) Money for singers (plane tickets, transport from airport, refreshments, etc.) = $5000
Total Profit = $2618250- (a+b) = $2367425

They also came up with the schedule for the whale concert:
1st 1/3: 3pm to 3.45 pm - PinkBreak: 3,45pm to 4pm
2nd 1/3: 4pm to 4.45 pm - Greenday
Break: 4.45pm to 5pm
3rdLast 1/3: 5pm to 5.45- U2
Ending: 5.45pm to 6pm - all singers sing 'We are the World'

I worked on the draft of the poster,

Naomi worked on the website, http://www.freewebs.com/whalegenerationconcert/

This lesson, we did individually, which was successful and didn't waste time.
We came up with alot of information, and we're getting things that we are need for
our final presentation. Although we haven't started writing our own speech yet, we were hard working, getting everything done quickly. We also gathered up as a group to talk about few things, our working process and shared our ideas. I learnt designing a particular poster for a particular event was quiet hard than I thought it would be because you have to put in all the information and design a scheme that matches the company's logo, title etc. Also by looking at the profits that a company makes by organising a big event is very massive. Overall, this lesson was a lesson where I learnt different things and did a lot of work.

Lesson 4

Lesson 4- Week 2
Gah Vin and I went down to Middle School Centre to call up few place for information.

-GCCC
-Music Mania (Australia Fair)
-Pac Fair
-Future Entertainment
-Art Centre ( <-from GCCC )

We called up the Gold Coast City Council about 4~5 times to ask about

-Hiring area
-Water
-Security
-First Aid
-Contact with the Summerdayze
-Company supporting Summerdayze
-Total Cost
-If we can put up posters anywhere
-If we can set up a ticket booth in the Shopping Centres

We found out...
-Doug Jennings Park is a state owned park
-Band amount of money
-Shop Owners’ permission of putting up posters / Try the Library
-Call up Shopping Centre managers for ticket booth
-Ticket Tec at God Coast Art Centre prints tickets
-Alcohol free event
-Event manager plan
-People from council / police for security or private companies

-Queensland ambulance for First Aid

Finally by calling up the Future Entertainment, we found out that there were approximately 25,000 people at the Summerdayze concert.

While we were contacting down in the middle school centre, Tasolwrote down some quick notes on the 4Ps that are involved in our product.
Promotion:
Flyers
Posters
Internet site
By mouth
Place:
Doug Jennings Park, main beach
Price:
$99 but may cost more – tickets come with wristbands
Product:
Rock concert
Whale hats
Wristbands

We needed the above information to estimate how many people fits in the park and to calculate the cost of the wristbands and the caps. I felt successful getting the information about the population. Although we wasted time calling up places and not getting any information, I think we used our time wisely. If there were two telephones, we could have split up so it takes less time but unfortunately there was only one telephone. It was really nervous to call up places and it was challenging because it takes alot of time and patience to do. I thought to myself people who have jobs like this would have tough days.

Lesson 3 - Week 1

Lesson 3 : Week 1

We've missed lessons due to National testing and Friday 16th May was our third lesson.
Naomi was away due to Gymnastics. We came up with questions that we have to get the answer for our assignment.

Questions:
How many audiences?
Which singers for the concert?
How long would be the concert?
Should the cost of wrist band be included in the ticket? Yes
Do we need to find out the cost of manufacturing the hats and the wristbands?
Concert:
- Where will it be held?
- What is the cost of the tickets?
- Where would we sell the tickets?

- What would be the cost of the equipments needed for the concert?
- How are we going to promote the concert?

(Staffs can be composed by the Green Peace Volunteers)

- or ask Mrs Powell
How much will it cost for the custom designed silicon wristbands/ hats for ___ ?

Website
- Information about the concert
- Selling tickets

We looked up possible website that we could contact to find out the cost for large amount of wristbands and hats ( for the concert). We dropped down notes for what would be needed for the concert and what to prepare for safety etc. We mostly spent some time looking up more about the summerdayze and discussing about what we could do to find more accurate information. On the weekends each of us decided to do some contacting to find out info.

Gah Vin was to contact the GCCC and find out
- portal loos
- hire area
- water van
- police and securities
- total cost
- ask if allowed to have a ticket booth se up in Aus. Fair, Pac. Fair, Harbour Town, Surface Paradise etc

I was to contact the Summerdayze and ask for
- Ask approximately how many tickets were sold
- Ph. number to contact the Summerdayze manager

( I was to design a rough copy of the poster and contact tasol to tell her the number of tickets)

Tasol was to contact to different places to ask and compare the price of the products
-How much will it cost for the custom designed silicon wristbands/ hats for ___ ?

Naomi was to drop some ideas about the design and what would go on for the website.

I felt successful in task of splitting the work to all the members in the group to do it as homework and how we came up with the idea of getting information on Summerdayze about how concerts work so that it is less work to go around looking for information which could be really hard to find. I thought giving out the silicon wristbands with the ticket and the cost already in the ticket was smart so that they don't know how much it will cost and we would also make a lot of profits. I think we've spent our time well and didn't waste any. I've learnt that GCCC is very helpful and more knowledge about setting up concerts.

---------
Before, Lesson 1 and 2
Our group followed the steps on the assignment sheet provided. We had troubles with our product choosing. We came up with varieties of different ideas but evaluating the idea altogether, there were some problems.

We've first decided to do a party targeting the university students. It's a party where you have a guest speaker coming and talking for a while, than have dinner and then a party. We came up with this idea because uni students love parties. But because uni-students party always involves some kind of alcohol drinking and drugs etc and the complication of the price of places, foods etc, we decided to change from event to a product.

We each came up with a product, for example a hat, t-shirt but because these we're made before, we weren't sure if we were allowed to do it. But our group realised if it's not the same print, design, it would be alright. So Gahvin and Naomi came up with an idea of a product, 'Save the whale pencil-case'. It was targeted against children and teenagers but some of us said young girls and boys like pretty things than 'save the whale' or environmental stationeries. But we all decided to continue with the idea. But thinking of all those materials needed to produce the pencil case, we might not have any profits left because we cannot sell them in very expensive price and other problems.

The third and the last idea we came up was a concert. It will be targeting against children-teenagers-uni students. We researched the Big Day Out , Summerdayze etc to find out some information about concerts that they have held in the past. We would be selling wrist bands, some drinks (maybe) and before, during and after, we would be selling save the whale hats. Celebrities coming and supporting this concert would be the ones who are supporting the Green Peace. We looked up cheap places to hire for our concert, all the equipments needed etc.

I felt the coming up with the concert idea we came up with, I think it’s an effective product and easy to promote, and tell people how serious whaling is now. Although I think we could have thought about the ideas more at home so that we didn’t have to waste time during the lesson. Everyone worked as together during these lessons, talking and listening to their own and other’s ideas and giving their opinions. During these lessons, I learnt that marketing is not an easy job to do and how complicating it is to organise a product to sell.
